Frequently asked questions
Straight answers from WeiDong Machinery, a manufacturer of tub grinders, horizontal grinders, wood chippers and straw shredders in Renqiu, Hebei since 2009, about machine selection, capacity, operation, warranty, shipping and parts.
Tub grinders
What materials can a tub grinder process?
A WeiDong tub grinder processes tree roots, stumps, branches, bark, wood pallets, demolition lumber, green waste, straw and palm residue. The WD3600 series has a Ø 3,600 mm tub and a typical capacity of 25–40 t/h, depending on material and moisture. It is available as road-wheeled (WD3600W), crawler (WD3600C), semi-trailer (WD3600S) and skid-mount (WD3600M), plus the electric WDE3600 versions.
What is the difference between a tub grinder and a horizontal grinder?
A tub grinder feeds material from a rotating, open tub into the grinding chamber and excels at bulky, irregular material such as stumps and root balls. A horizontal grinder uses a conveyor and feed roller, giving more consistent feeding of long material such as logs, whole trees, dimensional lumber and demolition wood. The choice depends on your main feedstock.
How much fuel does a tub grinder use?
The diesel WD3600 models are listed at 20–40 L/h. Actual consumption varies with hardwood or softwood, moisture, screen size and the required output size. Electric WDE3600 models use no diesel and suit stationary, grid-connected operations.
What do the model letters C, M, S, W and E mean?
C is crawler, M is skid-mount, S is semi-trailer towable and W is road-wheeled. WDE instead of WD means electric drive. A wheeled or towable chassis does not by itself guarantee road registration, which depends on the final configuration and local regulations.
What happened to the WD3600T trailer tub grinder?
WD3600T was the earlier model code of the trailer-type 3600 tub grinder; in the current model codes the towable version is the WD3600S (11,000 × 2,550 × 4,000 mm, 17 t).
Can a tub grinder process wet or green wood?
Yes, but production is lower than with dry material, because wet wood is heavier and needs more power to reduce. Suitable screen selection and sharp hammers or cutters help with high-moisture material.
What safety features do WeiDong tub grinders have?
WeiDong safety systems include emergency stop buttons, hydraulic reverse to clear jams, automatic feed reversal on overload, discharge-belt magnets for metal, readiness for fire suppression, lock-out/tag-out points for maintenance, and remote control on the crawler model so the operator can stay at a safe distance.
Should I choose a knife rotor or a hammer rotor?
The knife roller cuts cleaner chips and suits roots, branches, bark and straw where mulch or chip feedstock is wanted. The hammer roller shatters fibrous and mixed material and suits compost, biomass, formwork and demolition wood. The rotor type is confirmed for each application and material.
Horizontal grinders
What is a horizontal grinder used for?
Horizontal grinders process long wood, whole trees, green waste, demolition materials, logging residue, pallets and biomass feedstock. Their conveyor-fed infeed gives a consistent material flow for long boards and material that does not feed well in a tub.
Can horizontal grinders be electric?
Yes. The WD1690 family is diesel (408 kW) and the WDE1690 family is electric (360 kW), each on road-wheeled (W), crawler (C) or skid-mount (M) chassis. The WD1380 models are diesel.
What is the throughput of a horizontal grinder?
Throughput depends on material, moisture, contamination, rotor, screen and feeding, so WeiDong confirms a realistic range for your material rather than quoting one headline figure. Share a material profile and target output to confirm the applicable 1380 or 1690 configuration.
Can a horizontal grinder handle stumps and root balls?
It can process some stumps and roots, but a tub grinder is generally more efficient for them. For a mix of stumps and long timber, a horizontal grinder with a strong feed system can be a versatile choice.
Wood chippers
What size branches can the WD1100 handle?
The WD1100 has a 400 × 400 mm trapezoidal inlet and a typical capacity of 3–6 t/h with a 76 kW engine. The largest practical branch depends on species, shape, moisture and feeding.
Is the WD1100 mobile?
Yes. The WD1100 is a compact 2 t diesel unit that moves quickly between work sites for on-site branch and garden-waste processing; the chassis and transport method are confirmed in the quotation.
What is the difference between a wood chipper and a wood grinder?
A chipper cuts clean wood into uniform chips with blades. A grinder reduces material by impact with hammers or cutter teeth and handles dirtier, mixed feed better. Chippers give cleaner output; grinders accept a wider range of material.
Is there an electric wood chipper?
Yes. The WDE1100 has a 76 kW motor and a 380 V / 50 Hz supply as standard, customizable to the site.
Capacity, output and operation
Is the published capacity guaranteed?
No. Published capacity, such as 25–40 t/h for the 3600 series, is a typical range. Actual throughput depends on material type, piece size, moisture, contamination, screen opening, feeding continuity and operator practice. WeiDong confirms a realistic figure after reviewing your application and recommends a representative trial.
How is the output particle size controlled?
By the screen opening, the rotor type, the tools and the operating settings. Finer output reduces throughput; larger openings maximise production for fuel and volume reduction. Tell WeiDong the downstream use so the setup can be chosen.
How should I maintain a wood grinder daily?
Check engine oil and coolant, inspect hammers or cutters for wear, grease all fittings, check belt tension, inspect the screen for damage, check the hydraulic oil level and confirm all safety systems work.
What common problems occur and how are they fixed?
Plugged screens (reduce the feed rate or use a larger screen), belt slippage (adjust tension), excessive vibration (check for damaged or unbalanced hammers), hydraulic overheating (check the oil level and cooler) and engine power loss (check filters).
What does dual-stage hydraulic filtration mean?
Suction filtration and high-pressure return filtration work together to keep the hydraulic oil clean and extend component life. The spec sheet gives the filter model and replacement interval.
What is the total cost of ownership of a wood grinder?
Purchase, energy, wear parts, scheduled maintenance, labour, transport and downtime. Compare diesel and electric configurations with local energy prices, utilisation and site infrastructure rather than a universal percentage saving. See How much does it really cost to run a tub grinder?.
