Logging Slash Horizontal Grinder Output Size and Throughput Checks
A practical sampling and time-log method for testing logging-slash particle size, regrind, rejects and receiver-accepted horizontal grinder throughput.

Horizontal grinder output size and throughput for logging slash are separate measurements. The first asks whether the discharged product meets a receiver rule; the second asks how much accepted product leaves the line over a real work period. This field-note provides a sampling and time-log protocol for buyers and operators. It offers no universal production rate or particle guarantee.
Name the product outlet
Horizontal grinder output size and throughput for logging slash should be measured against the product a receiver actually wants. A biomass boiler, compost operation and landscape mulch buyer may use different particle, fines, moisture and contamination rules. Write the acceptance specification first. Then state whether the material is mixed branches, tops, bark and foliage or a cleaner fraction. One advertised screen opening or nameplate rate cannot settle both the product and volume questions.
Map the incoming slash
Walk the pile and estimate proportions of long limbs, crowns, twiggy material, leaves or needles and dirt-bearing wood. Record maximum practical length and branch spread, not only stem diameter. Mark metal, stone, soil and wire risks for exclusion. If slash comes from several logging areas, keep lots separate until their behavior is understood. A compact feed log should record source, handling history, recent weather and storage. The whole-tree selection guide covers related forest material, but loose logging slash needs a separate handling and sampling plan.
Design the output sample
Agree a sampling method with the receiver before the demonstration. Collect increments through the run, including startup and a normal loading sequence. Mix or report them according to the agreed test method, keeping timestamps and feed-lot labels. Photograph a ruler or sieve reference beside the sample. Record oversize, target material, fines and contamination by the method the buyer recognizes. A handful from the most attractive discharge patch is not a representative product sample. Retain a sealed reference where the project quality plan requires it.
Record screen and regrind
Log screen aperture, configuration, condition and any changes between runs. Separate first-pass product from material returned for another pass. Regrind uses time and energy but is not new feed supply. If a smaller screen improves acceptance, measure what happens to accepted product per work hour and fines rather than quoting rotor throughput alone. Wet fibrous slash can behave differently from dry limbs. Keep the exact observed condition in the record; avoid claiming a universal direction or percentage from one run.
Measure throughput at the right boundary
Use an input scale, truck tickets or a repeatable volume method with an explicitly measured conversion. Subtract rejected material before reporting eligible input. Use a separate measurement for receiver-accepted output. State whether a tonne is wet mass and include the moisture basis. Record the complete work window, including loader repositioning, clearing, screen checks, discharge handling and output-vehicle waits. The whole-tree throughput worksheet offers a related time log. For slash, add branch entanglement and foliage to the stoppage categories.
Run a representative sequence
Start with a short setup period, then measure a sustained sequence that resembles planned operation. Feed representative lots rather than only the easiest material. Record loader cycle time and the frequency of difficult pieces. If the loader serves both incoming and outbound piles, its combined duty is part of the production line. Note changes in operator rhythm, truck availability or weather so the observations can be interpreted. A peak-minute figure may help identify machine behavior, but it is not a shift delivery rate.
Inspect rejects and downtime
Create a reason code for each stop: inspection, oversize, contamination, feed bridging, discharge blockage, planned service or external wait. Count any rejected output separately from permitted regrind. A line with high input rate but repeated oversize may deliver less usable biomass. Discuss safe clearing with the model manual and trained staff; do not enter the feed opening to improve a trial number. Photograph the discharge and sample points so a later buyer can reproduce the measurement boundary.
Compare two controlled settings
When comparing screens or feed preparation, hold as many other factors steady as practical. Use adjacent material from a labeled lot, the same loader and the same acceptance method. Record the changeover time. If two lots are inherently different, report separate results rather than attributing the entire difference to a screen. Compare accepted output, fines, oversize and service effort together. A smaller average particle may have no commercial value if the receiver rejects extra fines or the line cannot fill delivery vehicles.
Convert the trial into planning figures
Present a range for accepted product per work hour under the tested slash mix. Show the measured clean and difficult runs and the assumptions used for a normal month. Keep utilization separate from instantaneous machine rate. Ask for a quote that states feed limits, configuration, wear items, service access and a repeatable acceptance test. The horizontal grinder equipment page can frame model discussions, and a horizontal wood grinder overview can orient the wider category.
For each result, note whether the crew had time to inspect and clean the line before the next lot. A trial that omits normal checks can overstate the practical daily rate. Repeating the run with the same material and acceptance method can reveal how much natural variation remains.
Document the decision
Keep feed photographs, screen details, weighed tickets, sieve results, stop log and receiver decision together. If the gap is product size, retest screen and preparation. If the gap is delivered tonnage, investigate loader and discharge before changing the machine specification. Send the evidence through the project enquiry page so the supplier can answer against the actual slash and outlet. A useful claim names the feed, setting, work window and accepted output, with the limits of the trial visible.
