Whole-Trees Loading Workflow for a Mobile Horizontal Grinder

A mobile whole-tree loading sequence covering landing layout, tree staging, loader cycles, contamination holds and discharge traffic.
Whole-trees loading workflow for a mobile horizontal grinder is the sequence that turns a roadside pile into safely presented feed. Loader reach, staging, contamination checks and product traffic can limit a field crew as much as the machine. This field-note shows what to map and time before promising a campaign rate. Use the exact model manual and site safety plan for operating limits.
Describe the landing and tree mix
A whole-trees loading workflow for a mobile horizontal grinder starts with a map of the landing. Show access, stable pad, incoming piles, loader route, grinder position, output pile and truck movement. Record whether the material is long stems, branchy crowns or roots, and mark rejected soil-bearing pieces. A workflow for clean stems may not work for tangled crowns. Keep a separate count of trees held for cutting or inspection so the loader target is based on material the machine can actually receive.
Confirm loader and attachment fit
Choose the loader, grapple or other attachment against tree length, mass, grip and sightline requirements. Check reach at the proposed machine position without putting the loader on unstable ground or crossing the discharge route. The operator should be able to see the receiving area and place material steadily. A nominal lift capacity alone does not establish a safe cycle. Confirm the grinder model’s loading method and feed limits in its manual. The whole-tree campaign sizing worksheet treats loader time as part of project delivery.
Create a receiving inspection step
Before feeding, identify wire, metal, stones, dirty roots and pieces outside the agreed feed condition. Provide a hold area accessible to the loader without blocking clean material. Record the source and reason for each rejection. A worker should not enter the feed zone to remove a hazard while the line is energized. Establish a model-specific stop and isolation procedure with trained personnel. If a source repeatedly carries contamination, correct the collection process rather than accepting constant interruptions as normal.
Stage stems and crowns separately
Place straight stems so they can be gripped and oriented in one planned movement. Keep branchy crowns in a separate pile where they can be untangled or trimmed safely. Do not stack a pile so high that the operator cannot judge the piece underneath. Mark maximum pile footprint and leave space for a second loader if the planned rate requires one. A staged tree should be ready for controlled presentation; repeated rehandling is a measurable cost, not an invisible part of grinder capacity.
Time the complete loading cycle
Measure travel to pile, inspection, gripping, orientation, movement to infeed, placement and return. Count pieces requiring a second lift. Record interruptions for cutting, contamination, truck conflict or output pile management. Use several representative cycles for each feed class. A short run with the easiest stems will understate time for normal mixed material. Compare this cycle rate to the grinder trial rate. If the loader is slower, increasing machine size alone will not raise accepted project output.
Separate feed and discharge traffic
Set one-way vehicle routes where possible. Keep product trucks out of the loader’s swing path and the machine’s discharge exclusion area. If the same loader clears output and feeds trees, schedule and record the switch. Ensure that a full product pile does not force unsafe backing or crossing. The mobile field cost sheet helps price support equipment and idle time, while this workflow explains the physical sequence behind those costs.
Account for moves and setup
A mobile crew may relocate after one pile is processed. Record time to clear a safe path, secure equipment, travel, set up barriers, inspect, warm up and restart. Move the loader and product transport in the same plan. A route with several small landings can lose a significant part of the day to setup even if each grinding run is fast. Keep the source pile size and move count beside the loading-cycle observation to estimate useful work hours.
Handle exceptional pieces deliberately
Set a decision rule for oversized forks, bent stems and roots. The rule may call for trimming, segregation, a different machine or rejection after supplier review. Do not improvise a push or drag that puts a person or machine in the exclusion area. Photograph the exceptional piece and record the time and equipment needed to resolve it. If exceptional pieces are frequent, change the normal workflow and quotation scope; they are no longer edge cases.
Link loading to accepted output
Track eligible feed, loaded feed and receiver-accepted product separately. Oversize may need another pass, and contamination may reduce accepted yield. The loader may also face wet, heavy material that changes cycle time. Use a complete work window to compare loading arrangements, including planned checks and output dispatch. A horizontal grinder range can support configuration discussion, but the model must be tested with the intended loading method.
At the end of a shift, compare planned and observed loader cycles for each material class. If a delay repeats, note whether it comes from pile orientation, equipment choice, truck traffic or the feed itself. This review turns the next landing setup into a measured improvement rather than a guess.
Lock a repeatable field procedure
Write the sequence as a crew sheet: site check, pile inspection, hold decision, stem or crown staging, controlled feed, output clearance, shutdown and move. Name the person who can stop feeding. Review the log after each landing and revise the layout when a recurring wait or hazard appears. A horizontal wood grinder overview frames the equipment family. Send the landing sketch, tree mix, loader details and target outlet through the project contact page for a model-specific review.
