Preventing Logging Slash Clogging in a Horizontal Grinder

Diagnose logging slash feed, screen and discharge interruptions with a safe event log and a controlled biomass trial.

WeiDong wood grinding equipment

Clogging during logging slash grinding is often a system problem rather than a single machine fault. Tangled branches can bridge at the feed, wet foliage can change how material moves, and a full discharge area can force a stop even when the rotor is clear. A biomass project needs to distinguish these causes before changing screens or buying a larger grinder. This field guide organizes observations from the incoming pile to the accepted output. Operators must follow the exact machine manual, guarding rules and site isolation procedure; no generic clearing instruction replaces them.

Define what “clogging” means on this job

Record where movement stops: at the loader, feed conveyor, rotor chamber, screen, discharge conveyor or output pile. Note whether the machine alarmed, slowed, reversed under its approved control, or stopped because a downstream truck was absent. Avoid calling every pause a clogged rotor. Photograph the affected material only from a safe location after the approved stop procedure. Give each event a time, lot identifier, operating configuration and person who inspected it. That record makes a repeated pattern visible and prevents a purchasing decision based on one dramatic incident.

Inspect the incoming slash mix

Separate tops, long forked limbs, short branches, foliage, bark and soil-bearing material. A heap can hide wire, stone or root pieces that should not enter a grinding trial. Mark wet or matted lots independently from dry ones. Record the loader’s grip and any pre-cutting. The logging slash preprocessing checklist provides a material ledger for this step. If one lot bridges repeatedly, compare its branch shape and presentation with the lot that fed normally before blaming an internal component.

Watch the loader presentation

Time the full loader cycle, including sorting and orienting difficult pieces. A large tangled pick can span the opening or pull adjacent limbs from the pile. The operator should use the machine’s specified feed approach and remain within the site traffic plan. Do not push a jam with people, loose tools or a loader bucket inside an active feed mechanism. If the proposed workaround requires an unsafe approach, stop and revise the material preparation or equipment choice. Record the proportion of picks requiring separation so a later throughput estimate includes this work.

Check feed controls and machine response

Some configurations provide monitored feed controls, while others have different manual and automatic functions. Confirm what is actually fitted, how it is set and what the manufacturer’s instructions permit. Log alarms, feed interruptions, changes in engine or drive load indication and any unusual vibration. A repeated stop at the same material lot may suggest an input issue; a stop across all lots may call for qualified equipment inspection. Do not raise a setting merely to override a warning. The logging slash throughput and output guide helps keep rate measurement separate from troubleshooting.

Treat screen and product size as a paired decision

A tighter output requirement can change retention and regrind demand, but the effect depends on material, screen configuration and the exact grinder. Ask the biomass receiver for a written acceptance rule, including oversize, fines, contamination and moisture basis. Record the installed screen and its condition before a trial. If clogging appears after a screen change, compare controlled runs with the same input lot and loading method. Do not claim a universal screen opening or output size from a blog post. Get the manufacturer to approve the configuration and its maintenance method for the material.

Follow material through discharge

Check whether the discharge conveyor, output pile, truck queue or regrind return is limiting production. A grinder can appear to have a feed problem when the output area is full and the crew stops feeding deliberately. Define the maximum permitted stockpile, truck exchange procedure and sampling point before production. Keep accepted product, untested output and rejects distinguishable. Record time spent moving output as well as machine feed-on time. If one loader serves both feed and output, its split duty must appear in the cycle log rather than in an optimistic production rate.

Stop and isolate before clearing

If a jam, foreign object or abnormal machine response requires inspection, follow the model-specific shutdown and energy-isolation procedure. Wait for moving parts to stop, secure hazardous energy under the site program and use trained staff. Do not open guards, enter infeed or reach into discharge while the machine is running. Confirm that every cover and person is accounted for before restart. Record the object or packed material found, the components inspected and the authorization to resume. If the cause is uncertain, escalate to the manufacturer or qualified service provider instead of repeating a risky clearing attempt.

Compare corrective actions one at a time

Candidate actions might include better source sorting, a different loader pick, pre-cutting difficult branches, stockpile relocation, output truck timing or a manufacturer-approved screen change. Test one action while keeping the lot and acceptance rule as comparable as practical. Note stops per measured input quantity, lost time, accepted output and additional labor. A lower jam count does not necessarily reduce cost if the action causes excessive rejects or extra handling. The biomass processing cost worksheet can capture those trade-offs.

Make the next trial reproducible

Before another run, write down source lot, weather exposure, material dimensions, loader and operator, feed controls, screen, discharge arrangement, receiver requirement and planned stop rules. Set a safe sampling and weighing method. Record feed-on time separately from inspection, truck change and clearing time. Keep the original run data when a change improves the result. A supplier can only recommend a configuration responsibly when both the difficult and easy lots are represented. Ask for the exact model limits and operating method in writing, then update the project procedure.

Send a useful enquiry

Provide photographs and measurements of representative slash, the location and frequency of each blockage, machine configuration if known, event log and output specification. Include the loader, available site space and accepted-product destination. The horizontal grinder range gives equipment context; a horizontal wood grinder overview can help procurement compare categories. Send the documented problem through the project enquiry page and request a supervised, model-specific trial plan rather than a promised rate without material evidence.
